Brett Opelt, Ph.D.
I started my career in 2014 as a licensed professional counselor, providing care for those who needed the support of an acute psychiatric hospitalization due to serious mental illness, trauma, and addiction. After 3 years, I saw the need to expand services to more people in various stages of life and returned to school to become a psychologist. During my doctoral training in the southwest, I trained in college counseling centers working with LGBTQI+, Primary Care and Family medicine, and with veterans in health psychology and home-based primary care. In 2021, I began 3 years of research training in rehabilitation psychology, with an emphasis on multiple sclerosis at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. As I came to the end of that training, I knew that, to reach even more people, I needed to learn the clinical side of the research I had taken part in within rehabilitation psychology. So, I decided to complete further training in clinical rehabilitation and pain psychology at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital and The Burn Center at MedStar Health. My clinical training with MedStar Health focused on those who survived burn accidents, spinal cord injuries and disease, amputations, cancer, transplant, and heart failure.
