Understanding Expectation for Mental Health Treatment: Initial and Follow-Up Sessions
"Healing takes time, and asking for help is a courageous step." — Mariska Hargitay
Biopsychosocial Intake Session (45 - 60 Minutes)
During this session, I will gather information about your social and developmental history, physical symptoms (i.e., sleep, appetite, and pain), mental health symptoms (i.e., depression, anxiety, PTSD), current and/or past experience of mental health treatment and confirm any current medications. During this session, we will discuss your goals of current therapy, evidence-based intervention focused treatment, and I will provide you with a diagnosis.
Further Sessions (45 - 60 Minutes)
Follow-up sessions (typically 45 – 60 minutes) are where we will begin to work towards reaching your goal(s) of attending therapy. Each session will end with a homework assignment, being the goal of continuing to work towards your goal outside of session. I am always transparent with patients that the first few sessions, you will leave feeling exhausted, like you are not making progress, and wanting to give up. I encourage you to not give up, because just like any new medication, it takes time to start to feel the benefits. The goal is that by the end of treatment, you feel restored and more resilient than before starting therapy.
